Common electrical issues & quick fixes

Electrical problems can range from minor annoyances to major safety hazards. Before scheduling a service call, try these troubleshooting steps to see if you can resolve the issue yourself.

1. Check your circuit breakers. If your power is out in certain areas of your home, it might be due to a tripped circuit breaker. Locate your electrical panel and check if any breakers are in the "off" position. Flip them back to "on" to restore power.

2. Inspect your outlets. If an outlet isn't working, it might be due to a tripped GFCI outlet. Check nearby outlets for a reset button and press it to restore power. If the outlet is hot or sparking, turn off the power at the breaker and call a professional.

3. Test your light switches. If a light switch isn't working, it might be due to a faulty switch. Turn off the power at the breaker, remove the switch cover, and inspect the wiring. If you're not comfortable working with electricity, give us a call.

4. Check your light bulbs. If a light isn't working, it might be due to a burnt-out bulb. Replace the bulb and see if that resolves the issue. If the new bulb doesn't work, there might be a problem with the fixture or wiring.

5. Inspect your appliances. If an appliance isn't working, it might be due to a tripped GFCI outlet or a blown fuse. Check the outlet and replace the fuse if necessary. If the appliance still doesn't work, it might need professional repair.

6. Look for flickering lights. Flickering lights can be caused by loose bulbs, faulty wiring, or an overloaded circuit. Tighten the bulb or redistribute the load on the circuit. If the problem persists, it might be a more serious issue.

7. Check for exposed wires. Exposed wires are a serious safety hazard. If you notice any exposed wires, turn off the power at the breaker and call a professional immediately.

FAQ

A service call is when we send an electrician out to help you figure out what's going on with your electrical system. Once he figures out what the issue is, he'll lay out the repair options and let you decide what route to take. If you want us to do the repair, he'll get to work on it. If you don't want to do the repair, you're only out the $29 service fee. That's a service call.
Absolutely! We can upgrade your electrical panel to ensure it meets your home's power needs and complies with current safety standards. If your panel is outdated or overloaded, give us a call.
We do! For $299, we will send an electrician out to inspect your home or business's electrical system. Each inspection comes with an emailed report showing the results of the inspection.
Circuit breakers protect your home from electrical hazards like fire and electrocution. If you have a breaker that keeps tripping, you may have too many appliances trying to use the circuit at once, a short in the circuit, a ground fault, or a faulty circuit breaker.
