Tips for saving money
Although installing a mini split isn't usually as expensive as a regular HVAC system, it is still a big investment. Here are a few ways to reduce the price tag:
1. Get all the utility rebates and tax credits you can. Local utilities offer thousands of dollars in rebates for buying energy efficient systems. And because mini split systems are so efficient, they typically allow you to get the highest category of rebates. Here's a list of all the AC rebates available to homeowners in Northwest Arkansas. You can also use our cashback calculator to get a quick idea of how much you may be eligible for.
2. Consider the DIY route. One of the nice things about mini splits is that they are much easier to DIY than regular split systems. The Mr. Cool brand can be bought online, comes precharged with refrigerant, and if you're pretty handy, you should be able to install it all by yourself. The downside is that it's not a super high quality brand and doesn't look great, but if you're looking at installing AC or heat into a small shop or someplace like that, DIY with a brand like Mr. Cool is probably the way to go as you'll save a good bit of money.
3. Get multiple quotes. Kind of a "duh", but you'd be amazed how many people only get one quote for mini split installs. Always play it safe and get two or three quotes to make sure no one is trying to take advantage of you.

A little bit about mini split systems
Mini splits are a newer sight in the United States, but they have a long history in the rest of the world. In fact, if you've ever traveled to Asia or Europe, you've probably seen them all over the place as they are the dominant source of heating and cooling over there. Here are a few reasons why they are becoming more popular in the States:
- I. Higher energy efficiency. The main benefit of mini splits is that they are substantially more energy efficient than regular split systems (the U.S. Department of Energy pegs the number at 30% more efficient). Why? Well for one, all mini splits are a type of super efficient air conditioner called a heat pump, which means they can both cool and heat a space. In addition to that, mini splits eliminate ductwork, which on average leaks 20-30% of your conditioned air out.
- II. Better temperature control. Despite their simplistic look, mini splits are actually quite advanced, possessing a cutting edge technology called a variable capacity compressor, a technology that is only just making its way to normal air conditioners. This device allows mini splits to easily adapt to cooling and heating demands, allowing for a more constant temperature and reducing the peaks and valleys compared to a normal HVAC system. The end result is better temperature control of your space.
- III. Cleaner air. Mini splits are mounted directly on the wall so they eliminate the need for conditioned air to pass through dirty ductwork. You'll also never have to pay for a duct cleaning service.
Benefits aside, mini splits do have some drawbacks. The big one for most people is the way they look. Because of their design, they have to be placed on the wall, which is a deal breaker for some. They can also leak water if not installed properly. Lastly, they tend to not last quite as long as a normal split system, lasting 10-12 years rather than 15-20 years.
